The event featured lectures by national and international experts, an artistic activity with live bacteria, and the presentation of about 150 scientific posters.
From July 2 to 4, 2025, the campus of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in Ribeirão Preto hosted the third edition of the Workshop on Microbial Molecular Biology, which brought together about 300 participants from different regions of Brazil and abroad. The program included lectures by prominent figures in microbiology, awards, interactive activities, and presentations of recent research in the field.
The event’s opening was marked by the Bacterial Art workshop, led by researcher Mehmet Berkmen. The activity, which aims to bring science and art together for communication purposes, allowed participants to create colorful visual artworks using live bacteria in Petri dishes. “Unlike most forms of art, our ‘paint’ is alive and will live, breathe, and grow over time – often in unpredictable ways,” says the researcher, Creative Director and co-founder of the initiative on the project’s website.
The workshop also featured presentations by renowned experts from Brazil and around the world, such as Nian Wang from the University of Florida, Alejandro Buschiazzo from the Pasteur Institute in Montevideo, Uruguay, Joana Azeredo from the University of Minho in Portugal, and Ana Lucia Tabet Oller do Nascimento from the Butantan Institute in São Paulo. The researchers shared advances in various current topics, such as molecular machinery, bacteriophages, interactions between pathogens and hosts, and the genetics and physiology of microorganisms.
Over the three days, about 150 scientific posters were presented. Ten posters received awards: eight in the ‘best poster category’ and two in the ‘best short talk category’. Nine of these awards were given to members of CEPID B3. The next edition of the workshop is already being planned – updates will be announced on the CEPID B3 website, newsletter, and social media.
