FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Research Center for Bacterial and Bacteriophage Biology (CEPID B3) is an extensive network of researchers who seek to understand the reproduction and behavior mechanisms of bacteria and their main predators, bacteriophages.

CEPID B3 has been linked to the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers program (CEPID) of the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (Fapesp) since 2023.

The CEPID B3 headquarters are located at the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo (IQ-USP). Avenida Professor Lineu Prestes 748, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP, CEP 05508-000.

More than 160 researchers are involved in CEPID B3.  The Center is linked to the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers program (CEPID) of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and has partnerships in institutions such as:

– Agronomic Institute (IAC)

– Institute of Biology (IB) of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP)

– Institute of Biosciences (IB) of the São Paulo State University (UNESP)

– Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP) of the University of São Paulo (USP)

– Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto (FCFRP) of the University of São Paulo (USP)

– Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo (USP)

– Institute of Chemistry (IQ) of the University of São Paulo (USP)

Bacteriophages, or phages, are viruses that specifically infect bacteria. The name comes from Greek, where “bakterion” means bacteria and “phagein” means to eat.

Although the term gives the idea that they are “bacteria eaters”, they do not feed on bacteria, but rather use these microorganisms as hosts during their reproduction process.
