Laboratory of Protein Structure and Function
Laboratory name: Laboratory of Protein Structure and Function
Principal investigator: Shaker Chuck Farah
Laboratory location: IQ-USP. Block 0 lower.
Line of research: The focus of our research is to understand the structural basis of processes important for complex bacterial behaviors, using different bacterial models, including the phytopathogen Xanthomonas citri, the causative agent of citrus canker. The systems under study include i) type IV secretion systems and their toxic protein substrates, ii) type IV pili, iii) bacteriophages, and iv) R-bodies and v) cyanide hydratases. Our research employs structural biology techniques (crystallography, electron microscopy, and protein NMR), spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, production of gene knockouts, and analysis of protein-protein interaction networks. Dr. Farah is the Director of the Center for Research in Biology of Bacteria and Bacteriophages (CEPID B3).
